Re-start learning Tokyo

--

I was born in Tokyo. And spent 31 years in Shibuya and Nihombashi. Most of people out side these areas think like Shibuya is young and energetic, Nihombashi is elder and established. It’s true. But for living, Shibuya has great calm residential area and Nihombashi people loves living close to busy. I love both but expensive. No, much cheeper than Bay Area.

And moved to Berkeley, California in 2011. Berkeley is great. Acceptable public transportation system which goes through San Francisco City and airports, and we can get great eats based on the food conscious culture made America delicious. Several brand shops including Apple Store on the 4th Street like Shibuya, and we can get the nature easily at the beaches or the forests behind the hills. I spent 7 years despite too rich and slow for Tokyo people who loves extremely busy. Totally poisoned.

The other hand, the 7 years I spent in Bay Area were great time for me because I could observe how smartphones changed our lives again (and wrote a lot). This is my second experience. The first one was around 2000 in Japan with Internet-connected feature phones called Keitai. Smartphones empowered people.

What the next? It’s a city. The technologies like IoT, robotics, artificial intelligent, and augmented/virtual reality start changing cities around the world. Cryptocurrencies will works well for new system or businesses in the high liquidity society. And where is the fastest? I think Tokyo. Even the Olympic Games won’t come, Tokyo is the best to observe it.

But there are some problems. If I go back to Tokyo now, I will get lost seriously. I feel I couldn’t catch up the latest trends or situation of Tokyo for many years even I had business trips alone several times or went home with my family once a year.

Some friends in Bay Area start thinking about moving to Tokyo or Japan. I don’t have any concrete plan of going back to Tokyo, but it’s a good chance to review or re-learn today’s Tokyo. Update my knowledge of my home city and I would like to share the process here.
