Takanawa Gateway
If you leave Tokyo for 7 years, some new stations you never know are built even where is one of the world best developed city. But at the first heard, I can’t understand why the new station name has “Gateway” word. Takanawa Gateway, this is the new station name between Shinagawa and Tamachi located in bay shore area in Tokyo.
JR East, who are building new station explains about new station name in their press release.
This area is the place where has been busy highway and as a gateway of Edo from ancient times. During Meiji era, the place got historical background of the railway which connected areas. The new city aims to form an international exchange base where advanced companies and talent gather from all over the world. The new station inherits the history of this area and will continue to play a role as an exchange base. As a new station connects past and future, Japan and the world, and many people, the whole city. We selected to contribute to the development of the body.
JR East sought new station name publicly, and “Takanawa Gateway” got 36 vote, placed 136th. The first place was just “Takanawa”. But till 85 years ago, Takanawa Station existed and operated by Keikyu, the different railroad company. I think this is the reason why JR East adds “Gateway”.
The new station will have beautiful lightning produced by Kaoru Mende, a Japanese architectural lighting designer. The new station will open Spring 2020.
